La morte prematura di John Singleton ha scosso la comunità cinematografica. Il regista ha fatto la storia del cinema americano affermandosi come il più giovane nominato ai Premi Oscar, all’età di 23 anni, per il suo Boyz n the hood – Strade violente. Singleton è stato anche il primo regista di colore ad ottenere la nomination. Moltissimi volti hollywoodiani, dopo l’ufficializzazione della sua morte, hanno espresso il loro cordoglio sui social. Il regista è deceduto in seguito ad un ictus. In un post Instagram, Spike Lee ha definito Singleton come suo fratello e ha detto che dal primo giorno in poi della loro amicizia, loro due sono rimasti particolarmente vicini. Anche Jordan Peele, Samuel L. Jackson e John Carpenter hanno contribuito a ricordare il regista.
